Surprise Yourself!

All consuming work commitments, a social calendar to manage and often family commitments to juggle can lead to the need for routine in an attempt to ensure that the things that need to be done get done. If something happens to change that routine it is more likely that things will get forgotten. Routine certainly can have its place in life however it can also stifle our more creative tendencies so life is lived more in our comfort zone, that place where we feel comfortable and safe. This can lead to repetition (if it’s worked before, it will work again) and can be a hard cycle to get out of. If the comfort zone is ‘pushed’ a little and life is lived more in the stretch zone (where you feel more challenged), you enter the ‘space’ where most development happens and more self discovery takes place leading to excitement and growth.

Are you feeling as though you would like to challenge your daily routine? Have you got things you would like to do but can’t seem to find the time to do them? Do you constantly find yourself doing things but never feel like you are achieving anything for yourself (or anything at all) other than getting the routine things done? If so, now might be the time to take a closer look at the things you would really like to achieve or accomplish and really challenge yourself.

I have seen several clients recently who have felt ‘stuck in a rut’ or have fallen victim to their busy schedules that haven’t left them with any time to do what they would really like to do. Why not create a list of things you would like to do then focus on one, may be two of these things to regain your sense of self and stretch your comfort zone. Here are a few of examples from clients who have recently done just that.

  • Learn a new skill. One client had thoroughly enjoyed a pottery class she had done in her early 20’s and still had some beautiful pieces that she proudly displayed in her home. Now with a high powered job, a husband and 2 young children to manage she couldn’t find the time to take up a hobby that would enable her to do something that she had a real talent for, there was something missing. We spent time reflecting on the things that had made her really happy in the past and the pottery really stood out at something she would like to take up again. With renewed drive and focus and a revamp of her busy schedule, she signed up to a weekly evening class local to her and continues to produce some amazing pieces that she now sells at local craft fairs. She hasn’t noticed any negative impact having cut out the things from her schedule that didn’t help her to achieve her overall goals. Taking up this new skill has given her back the pleasure that she experienced before and she has gained a new group of friends to socialise with who have similar interests as a bonus!
  • Take on a new challenge. With a demanding job and other major responsibilities outside the workplace another client longed to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. It was something she had wanted to do from her teenage years but other priorities always took a precedent. The reason she gave for not having accomplished this challenge so far was lack of time. We looked closely at motivating factors to achieve this goal and how her time was currently spent. It became clear that the things that took up most of her time weren’t helping to achieve the overall goals that she wanted to accomplish in her life. With a different outlook on her focus and keeping the bigger picture in mind a few tweaks were made to her routine that has led to her now getting a group of friends together to train for the climb that they all plan to complete next year. How satisfying will that be for her!
  • Other examples are: writing a book, taking up yoga, dog walking for a local charity, travelling alone, visiting a city you have always wanted to go to…. and any others personal to you.
